Saturday was my FLL team’s first competition. I think they were prepared for it and did extremely well. This was the first competition where I didn’t do a whole lot while I was there. It’s not that I didn’t want to do anything; it was more that I truly believe our teams know what they are doing and will be fine.
The only real issue I had was with the teacher (my mother). We had two teams there, but she was trying to run them like they were one team. When one team had a round, the other one had to be there. When one team was giving their presentation, the other had to watch. Since the teams had 5 rounds each, that didn’t work to well. It got to the point that there was no down time for the kids, they were always running the robot, practicing or watching the other team. The kids need some downtime between rounds to talk about the round and figure out what they can do better next time. After a few hours of this constant running around, I finally told her to stop. After she stopped running two teams as one, both teams started doing better and making progress.
Overall the teams did really well. One team won the programming award and the other won the presentation award. The robot scores placed the teams in 6th and 10th place, respectively, but what is more important is that the kids really understand the robot, the presentation, and everything they’ve worked on. If they want to change something, they know hoe to change it. They did a great job talking to the judges and answering their questions.
This week the tams are meeting twice to work on the robots a little bit and practice their presentations.
